Emmanuel Obi has perfectly captured the essence of the detective noir genre with his lead character, Bruce Howard.

The stories in this collection move at a good pace, and have some interesting and likeable characters that provide connection and consistency between different stories. Obi has generated some really interesting storylines and twists that keep the reader guessing.

It’s also refreshing that, over time, his lead character reveals his own weaknesses and humanity, which add another layer of complexity to his bravado and his genius for solving crime.

There is some adult content, so I’d recommend this book for anyone over 18 who enjoys a good, old-fashioned “whodunnit” with modern twists.

In short, this is a really enjoyable collection.

‘Crazy for Alice’ – Alex Dunn

‘Crazy for Alice’ challenges the reader to question their assumptions… #YA #novella #book #booklovers #fantasy

ratings-1482011_960_720-2

‘Crazy for Alice’ challenges the reader to question their assumptions and understandings of other people, especially those who seem to push the boundaries. Can we always be sure that someone who sounds crazy really is? Can we always assume that the popularly accepted “story”is actually correct?

This is a really interesting and compelling book. It has a very satisfying balance of humour and desperation among the characters, with a few good heart stopping moments thrown in for good measure. The ending leaves the reader with a strong sense of resolution.

I’d definitely recommend it for any YA audience, and for anyone older who still enjoys a good story.

It would suit anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling or A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.

I’ll definitely be recommending it for a few people I know.

‘Lost Lake House’ by Elisabeth Grace Foley

Review: ‘Lost Lake House’ by Elisabeth Grace Foley. 5 stars. #excellent #YA #novella #books #booklovers

This is the second in Foley’s ‘Historical Fairytales Series’ which reinvents well-known fairy tales into new stories that happen at different points in history.

Even without knowing that, this is a wonderful story that is well capable of standing alone. The story is really beautifully told, drawing the reader into the story with ease.

The plot is engaging and interesting, with a good pace and enough suspense to keep the reader interested.

The characters are well-developed, experiencing complications that most young adults can relate to, especially in terms of peer pressure and family relationship issues.

The settings are really nicely characterized, yet this is achieved without laborious descriptions.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great read for anyone from YA upwards.

‘Death Comes Calling’ – F.B Hogan

‘Death Comes Calling’ by F.B Hogan. 5 stars! #books #horror #reading #supernatural #death #

This collection is really great! I was hooked before I finished the first story, and had to keep on reading.

Each one is well-crafted with some delicious twists and turns that are guaranteed to keep the reader enchanted! Hogan’s writing style is very easy to read, and the stories moved at a very comfortable pace.

I really like the way the stories are all individual and able to stand alone on their own merits, yet they form a very effective series that has good cohesion and unity throughout.

This is not just a collection to be enjoyed on Halloween. These stories will entertain anyone with a love of the macabre on any night of the year.

‘Tompkin’s School for the Extraordinarily Talented’ by Tabi Slick

Tompkin’s School: 4 stars.

ratings-1482011_960_720-3

This is a really good story with lots of twists and turns, some of which are absolutely heart-stopping. It’s the story of Izara and her journey of discovery of truth about herself and her twin brother, Kain, as they confront a world they had never dreamed of.
The story has some incredibly dark moments, so I’d recommend it for an audience of 16+ years of age, but it also has strong elements of hope despite the  odds.

The characters are relatable and very engaging. As a reader, I didn’t always like Izara or Kain, but that actually made them more believable and intriguing.

The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the number of regular typos in the text, which I found annoying: they didn’t really detract from the story at all, but I am a stickler for those things, and I did find it distracting.

The book ended on a cliffhanger, so it wasn’t satisfying in the sense of getting answers or resolution, but it definitely whets the appetite for the next instalment!
I want more of Tompkin’s Academy!

‘In Passing’ by Tobie Hewitt

‘In Passing’ by Tobie Hewitt: Five stars.

ratings-1482011_960_720-2

‘In Passing’ by Tobie Hewitt is a thought-provoking story that explores questions we often have about life, death, and how we find those soul mates  we know we’re meant to be with. The characters are just gorgeous, and the struggles they face are ones that the reader can easily identify with.

This delightful book opens with one of the best opening lines I’ve read in a long time : “The air shimmered with a knowing beyond doubt.” That line really made me stop and think, and visualise scenes where this could have been the case. From that moment, I was fully engaged with the story and completely hooked by Tobie Hewitt’s writing.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a “what if?” story, and
for those who miss someone they’ve lost along the way.

This is a wonderful Australian story…

This is a wonderful Australian story for older kids, young adults and families.

‘Sealskin Coast’ is filled with engaging, delightful characters, especially Wallace. It’s delightful to be allowed into this world of possibilities, and it’s a privilege to share Wallace’s journey of hope and discovery.

I highly recommend this beautiful story.
